Stonnington City Brass Incorporated

A Brief History

Stonnington City Brass Incorporated came into existence in November 1911, under the guidance of Bandmaster Robert McAnally.

At the time it was known as the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Employees Band. On April 2, 1912 the name was amended to Malvern and Prahran Tramways Employees Band. It was not much later that the name was changed again, and the famous Malvern Tramways Band was born.

In addition to his leadership, Robert McAnally had spent many hours in the bandroom meticulously writing dozens of scores of well-known classical compositions by the world's leading composers. The Band is still in possession of these beautifully written manuscripts, which are now extremely valuable. Unfortunately, within two years, Mr McAnally resigned, and on 10 January, 1915, Mr Harry Shugg, of the Geelong Harbour Trust Band, was appointed to the position of Bandmaster, which he held for 33 years.

By 1947, when most of its original members, who were tram drivers, conductors and engineers, had retired or moved to other districts, the Band was renamed the Malvern Municipal Band. Conductor Harry Shugg, who in 1935 had been made a Captain as Commanding Officer of all army bands, continued to lead the Band to consistent success throughout the country. Unfortunately his career came to an end when he retired due to ill health in 1948.

In 1996, Mr Kevin Hillier, ex Royal Australian Navy Band Music Director took over the baton. His music career started in the Stawell Brass Band, and was followed by his decision to join the Navy as a Junior Musician at the age of 15. He has performed on euphonium and trombone, taught in the School of Music, and studied in England with the Royal Marines for almost two years.

Although currently not involved in the competition scene, the Band devotes its efforts to community banding and is extremely busy fulfilling approximately 30 engagements annually, including Citizenship Ceremonies for Stonnington Council, Anzac Parades and services, concerts and other local functions.

Rehearsals are held every Tuesday night in the historic bandroom situated in Northbrook House, located at the rear of the public library.

New members and visitors are always welcome to attend rehearsals. Further information may be obtained from the Secretary, Wes Brown, on 9803 6845.
